Is Microchipping a Legal Requirement?
For Dogs
Since 6 April 2016, all dogs in the UK must be microchipped and registered to an approved database. Owners who fail to comply can face fines of up to £500.
For Cats
From 10 June 2024, microchipping will also be mandatory for cats over the age of 20 weeks. Like dogs, failing to comply could lead to fines of £500.
Important Note: Even if your cat is an indoor pet, microchipping is still essential. Cats often escape or get lost when frightened, especially during moves or emergencies.
